Description:

LA Divine, Cold War Kids most expansive and ambitious effort so far, pays tribute to Los Angeles in all its strange glory, embodying the Long Beach-bred band s endless fascination with their adopted hometown. In many ways, LA is the least divine city, the most hedonistic and irreverent and disconnected from history, says Willett. LA s so massive, I feel like I m always finding something new in it, adds bassist Matt Maust. It s an incredibly weird place, and I m happy to have made an album that totally honors that weirdness.

Artist: San Fermin
Album: Belong
Genre: Alternative
Year: 2017
Size: ~ 323 mb

Quality: lossless
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

The follow-up to 2015’s elaborate and often challenging Jackrabbit, Belong finds San Fermin mastermind Ellis Ludwig-Leone delivering a more streamlined set of chamber pop confections that reflects the group’s evolution from his post-Yale composition project to a fully operational and battle-tested band. As per usual, the lineup has been tooled with a bit — they are now an eight-piece — but brooding baritone Allen Tate and charismatic N.Y.C. singer/songwriter Charlene Kaye remain the band’s vocal mainstays — Kaye took over for touring vocalist Rae Cassidy in 2014. The aptly named “Open” starts things off disjointedly, with the vaguely humanoid electronic samples that heralded Jackrabbit eventually giving way to elliptical swirls of strings and brass, and steamy electro-beats. Subsequent cuts “Bride” and “Oceanica” continue to flirt with icy European pop textures, with the former invoking names like Susanne Sundfr and Lykke Li, and the latter sharing space with the midnight urban electronica of Sohn and Lapsley — the slow-burn “Bones” wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Frank Ocean’s Blond. Ludwig-Leone’s arrangements continue to impress with their ability to frame simple melodies with controlled chaos, and Tate and Kaye provide compelling performances throughout, especially on the smoldering title cut, in which they tease each other with the promise/threat “I belong to you, but not all the time.” Belong manages to strike a nice balance between San Fermin’s musical theater/experimental rock predilections and their emerging pop ambitions, and while there’s still a lot to chew on, the taste has grown significantly sweeter. — AllMusic Review by James Christopher Monger

Artist: Future Islands
Album: The Far Field
Genre: Alternative
Year: 2017
Size: ~ 303 mb
Source: Digital Download
Quality: lossless
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

The Far Field refines and builds on the breakthroughs of the Baltimore-based trio’s 2014 album Singles, bursting with undeniable hooks and disarmingly honest lyrics written by Samuel T. Herring (vocals, lyrics), William Cashion (bass, guitars) and Gerrit Whelmers (keyboards, programming). After the success of Singles and the hundreds of Future Islands shows played in that period, the band began writing new material on the coast of North Carolina, and continued throughout the year in Baltimore before road-testing these songs at a series of secret shows under fake names. Later that year, they traveled to Los Angeles to record with Grammy Award-winning producer John Congleton at the legendary Sunset Sound, where everyone from The Beach Boys to Prince have laid down masterpieces. With string and horn arrangements by Patrick McMinn, The Far Field is the first Future Islands record to feature live drums by Michael Lowry, who joined the band prior to their sensational performance of “Seasons (Waiting On You)” on David Letterman’s late night TV show. Blondie’s Debbie Harry also makes a guest appearance, in a duet with Herring on penultimate track “Shadows.” Across The Far Field’s twelve chest-pounding love songs and odes to the road, Future Islands brilliantly expresses the band’s central themes they’ve been exploring for the last decade: that there is power in emotional vulnerability, that one can find a way to laugh and cry in the same breath — and be stronger for it. “This is the kind of band that makes you wish other bands tried harder.” – Pitchfork “An absolute and unqualified triumph” -Stereogum “Mournful, triumphant, heroic” -Complex

Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

Timber Timbre’s music has always traced a shadowed path, using cues of the past to fuse the sound of a distant, haunted now. Its fourth record, Sincerely, Future Pollution, is the cinema of a dazzling dystopia, rattled by the science fiction of this bluntly nonfictional time. Taylor Kirk and co-composers Mathieu Charbonneau and Simon Trottier, together with drummer Olivier Fairfield, offer their most daring artistic work yet. With the palette of archetypal synthesizers at La Frette studio outside Paris, the long-time collaborators took a unique approach to Timber Timbre’s characteristic sonic invention. The first single, “Sewer Blues,” is an ironclad groove marked by plodding, heavy rhythm, cavernous delay, and a backdrop of starry synthesizers. Sincerely, Future Pollution is a romance of neoteric machines and dark, futuristic hues, with promise as beautiful as it is unsettling. Covering a spectrum of New Age to Popular French Disco Revival, the sound is synthetic, exotic, yet familiar, with Kirk’s chilling croon and the mid-apocalyptic setting of his poetry. This is Timber Timbre’s document of our generation’s degeneration and disarray: Signed and sealed / Sincerely, The Pollution

Year: 2017
Size: ~ 243 mb

Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

Despite sharing their name with a northeastern state, the Maine formed in 2007 in Tempe, Arizona, a collegiate suburb of Phoenix. Most of the bandmembers — singer John O’Callaghan, guitarists Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco, bassist Garrett Nickelsen, and drummer Pat Kirch — were in high school at the time, and the guys quickly turned their ’90s radio rock band influences into a familiar, infectious pop-punk sound. The Maine signed to Fearless Records and released a five-song concept EP, The Way We Talk, in 2007. After performing on the Vans Warped Tour one year later, the group issued a full-length debut album, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop, which was produced by emo-pop veteran Matt Squire (Simple Plan, Sum 41). The record peaked at number 40 on the Billboard charts and caught the ear of Warner Bros., which signed the Maine to a major-label contract in 2009. After releasing a deluxe version of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop later that year, the group returned to the studio, eventually emerging in 2010 with the sophomore album Black & White. That year also marked some new developments for the band: their first headlining tour, and Album of the Year accolades for Black & White from Alternative Press. The Maine offered the full-length Pioneer in December 2011, their first after parting ways with Warner. The album was reissued a year later, packaged along with the six-track EP Good Love. Their fourth effort, Forever Halloween, arrived in June 2013, debuting in the Billboard Top 40. Produced by Brendan Benson of the Raconteurs, the album was the second to be released without major-label help. Months later, the Maine released their seventh EP, the five-song acoustic Imaginary Numbers. By 2015, the band began to sound more like the 1975 than the rest of the bands on the Warped Tour, as evidenced by their fifth album, American Candy. Featuring the hit “English Girls,” the album debuted in the Top Ten of the Billboard independent, alternative, and rock charts. Further following that melodic pop path, they released a two-part covers EP titled Covers: Side A included their takes on late-’90s hits by New Radicals, Len, and Backstreet Boys, while Side B featured contemporary hits by Drake, Justin Bieber, and Rihanna. In January, 2017 the band issued the single “Bad Behavior,” in anticipation of the release of their sixth studio long-player, Lovely, Little, Lonely, which arrived later that April. ~ Steve Leggett & Neil Z. Genre: Alternative
Year: 2017
Size: ~ 235 mb

Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

Singer and songwriter Sean Rowe’s rather astonishing singing voice evokes the sound of the ages. His big rumbling baritone bears traces of John Lee Hooker, Greg Brown, Wilson Pickett, and others, though it is utterly unaffected. Rowe hails from Troy, New York. In his teens he discovered the blues of Muddy Waters and Hooker as well as the soul music of Marvin Gaye and Ray Charles. He began playing guitar and learning songs by virtually every artist he admired — and then some. By the time he began playing the local bar scene at 18, he had amassed enough original and cover material to perform four one-hour sets per night. Also during his teen years, Rowe encountered the book The Tracker by naturalist Tom Brown, and it deeply influenced his thinking. He was already drawn to the woods and spent a great deal of time investigating the landscape around his home, but his passion for the wild grew; it influenced not only his thinking, but his songwriting. He attended Brown’s Wilderness Survival School, and began to write more of his own material. He left the local bar scene at 25 a seasoned warrior, and self-released his debut, 27, in 2003. Rowe began to tour, eventually winning an opening slot on Noah and the Whale’s 2010 British jaunt. When at home, he continued his deep philosophical and physical investigation of the natural world. He went to live at Hawk Circle Wilderness Education (an outdoor survival school) for an entire year. Spending the year in the wild culminated in a 24-day solo survival quest, living completely outside and off the land for the entire period. That experience provided the impetus for the songs on Magic, which was released by Anti- in 2011 and was greeted with nearly universal acclaim. The Salesman and the Shark, his sophomore effort for the label, appeared in August of 2012. Looking to explore a sunnier sound, Rowe returned in 2014 with his eclectic fourth album, Madman, which found the singer dabbling with pop and bluesy rock along with brooding folk. For his fifth release, Rowe took control of the whole process, crowdfunding the recording and releasing the album via his own label, Three Rivers, while striking a licensing deal with his former label, Anti-. The resulting New Lore was issued at the beginning of 2017. ~ Thom Jurek
